It Is Hard Being An Artist

When you cook that favorite meal, you use receipts that have been handed down for generations.  When you play that favorite piece of music, you are reading music that was probably composed generations ago.
When you lay your brush down to create art, it is an original. You may paint a tree, fish, or flowers. But do you know how hard it is to make it your tree, fish, or flower? To make it different that anyone else's art??? Not easy being an artist.

What Color?? Oriental Brush Painting Classes

Started a new 6 weeks oriental brush painting session this week at Soft Brush Studio, Alexandria, VA.. I am teaching the group butternut squash with leaves.  First lesson is how to match the color of the squash!!!!

Most of my students use the professional grade of Marie's Chinese watercolors with 12 tubes of paint in the box.  All colors are mixed from those 12 colors. What colors would you blend to get this color??

I think we have made a pretty decent match, don't you??
For the leaves, we are going to keep black ink for the contrast of dark and light.
I am very proud of my students.  They are all really eager to learn,  That is the only way I can teach them..

Oriental Brush Painting Workshop - 2019

5 Day workshop instructed by Darlene Kaplan.

 Create your own masterpiece in the Lingnan style of Oriental Brush Painting.

DATES:    August 12 thru 16, 2019

TIMES:     10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

WHERE:  Soft Brush Studio, 4609 Franconia Rd, Alexandria, VA 22310

Subjects will include birds, flowers, lotus, fish, insects, & waterfalls.

 Bring your lunch.

PRICE:  $450 for 5 days. Please make tuition check payable to Darlene Kaplan. Payment is due before August 7, 2019.

Arrive early to get set up and ready to go by 10 am. Class starts promptly.  Due to limited space, preference will be given to the students who sign up for the entire week.
